Recovering From Ourselves

In an age where everyone has distinguished themselves with a personal brand, where corporations work to advance their corporate brand, they spend billions on tag lines, mission statements and catch phrases. They do this all in hopes that you will buy what they are selling. The church, however, is not a brand or strategy to be bought and sold. The church's defining mark, its sole motivation, is wrapped up in one word – LOVE. “And they shall know us by our love.” It is why we worship, it's why we care, it's why we plant churches, so that others will know the love of Christ. This week’s devos drill down on the topic of love. It's our prayer that you soak it in, and live it out. Also, let others know about our daily devos.

“For God so loved the world, He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” John 3:16

What a stunning truth! This verse should be read and reread by every Christian until it’s metabolized in their soul. It seems too good to be true. The brightness of this verse has been dimmed by rainbow wig-wearing clowns in the stands, it's been cheapened by being painted on the faces of athletes. God comes for failures, business people, bridge dwellers, rock stars, farmers, prostitutes, tax agents and staggering drunks. He has a single stance towards you – God loves you.

How completely does God love you? He demonstrated the depth of His love in His gift of Jesus, who is the “author and finisher of your faith” (Hebrews 12:2). Jesus perfectly revealed God’s heart by living a sinless life on this earth for you, and then dying as the atoning sacrifice for your sins.

From the beginning, our Holy God knew that we were incapable of living a pure and sinless life, so He sent Jesus to show us the way. Jesus did not hesitate or say no to the Father, and He gave His life so that we could be forgiven of our sins and be given everlasting life with Him, the Holy Spirit, and the Father.

Turns out all our years of trying to recover from ourselves by making promises to lift ourselves up were pointless. You were loved before you started to try to change. You were already home before you took one step to return.

Because of His love for you, God daily blesses you with life. Because of His love for you, Jesus opens the door to eternal life when you name Him your Savior and Lord. So, acting in God’s perfect love, reach out to other people who do not know Him.

Find a sheet of paper small enough to fit in a wallet or purse and write down the names of four people you know. With those four people in mind, think of tangible ways you can share Jesus’ love with them.
