Colossians 1:9-10

In the Middle of a Mess

For this reason also, since the day we heard it, we do not cease to pray for you and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding, so that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God.
Colossians 1: 9-10

Christians wake up in the middle of a mess every day and get out of bed to do something about it. They do something about it because God has made it clear, He’s not content to rescue just a few souls from eternal separation. In the first several verses of Colossians, Paul explained why he and Timothy were thankful for their brothers and sisters. The Colossian Christians had strong faith in Christ, loved other, and played a key role in spreading the gospel. Overall, they honored God, and one another, and were accomplishing a great work. For that reason, Paul prayed for them.
He didn’t pray in generalities, he wasn’t shallow, or stingy. Rather, he prays generously.

He makes four specific requests.
1. A spiritual insight;
2. A worthy walk;
3. Abundant power; and
4. A thankful spirit.

As believers today, we need these four elements now more than ever. We would do well, before beginning our day, to pray for these same things - that we might be sustained by the power of His Spirit.

As a Christian, that is certainly a life you should desire! In reading Paul’s prayer, you get an inside glimpse into what he believes is vital for this great work to continue. Do you want to live a life that is fruitful? Do you want to play a role in the gospel being spread throughout the whole world? Take some time to pray over these verses for yourself. Ask the Lord to fill you with the knowledge of His will, to give you wisdom and spiritual understanding, and to help you walk in a way that fully pleases Him. You can’t be fruitful in your work until you’re faithful
in your walk and following His will.

Dear Father, may I honor You today. Please use me to love others, to bring glory to Yourself, and to spread the gospel to those around me.
