Join us this season as we RETHINK CHRISTMAS by refocusing our attention on Jesus, who, as the MAKER of creation, was born in a MANGER taking on all our limitations; who went to the cross, defeated every foe as the rightful MESSIAH, and ascended to be seated on the throne in MAJESTY. Make our daily Devos a part of your regular rhythm of spiritual growth.
The Scent of Love
“. . . those who believe in His name,” John 1:12
Words spoken are best understood by the way they are lived. This is true of every relationship we are in. It’s especially true for the family. As kids, we learned right from wrong, truth from lies, trust from betrayal, and making and breaking promises. We learned these things not from what our parents said, but how they lived.
God has always been a God of action. His life is lived in the verbs, beginning by speaking the world into existence. Every scene in scripture is God’s relentless pursuit of our heart. As the narrative unfolds, God keeps working, reaching, redeeming and restoring the brokenness of our lives.
God communicates with us through action. This verse in Hebrews is deeply profound, “God has spoken to us through His Son.” Think of it, the God of all creation has communicated Himself through His Son Jesus, the One who lay in a Bethlehem manger. The Lord Jesus is God’s explanation and revelation to mankind.
When God wanted us to know Him, He didn’t send a set of propositions, He didn’t send a list of rules. He didn’t send a list, He sent love. He sent Jesus. Jesus is who God is, what God wants, and how He has solved the problem of sin. Jesus is the Word and He dwelt among us so we could see what God was saying.
In the active words and work of Jesus, we see what love really is and what life is all about. God, through Jesus, has crafted each of His words into a divine act. The Son radiates the glory of God, He expresses the character of God. He brings the power and wisdom of God into ordinary life.
Want to hear God? Look to Jesus. Want to see Jesus? Read scripture, connect to a community that’s exposing and explaining God’s word, all the while trying hard to follow Him and live out His teachings. When God speaks to you, His words will always look like Jesus.
