Jesus in Present Tense – The Living One
“I am the Living One; . . .” Revelation 1:18
Knowing Jesus is a never-ending exploration. This week we pause in our series in Mark to reflect on a simple truth; Jesus is fully alive and ever-present. How astonishing we can know Jesus!
We live in the age of the 24-hour news cycle – information appears and quickly dissipates. But, knowledge of Jesus is infinitely valuable and timeless. The apostle declares “all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge are hidden in Christ.” (Col. 2:3). We find, in our journey to know Him, the more we know Him, the more there is to learn. All of God’s word permeates with His presence. And awaits discovery.
One of the best ways to know more of Christ, is by looking at the names Jesus used to describe Himself. Each name is in the present tense and reveals a new aspect of His person and purpose.
This is important because our belief in Jesus will never exceed our perception of Jesus. It matters a great deal what we think about when we think about Jesus.
The book of Revelation begins where the Gospels end. John is struck down by a dazzling splendor of the vision – the hand that created the heavens was placed on John to comfort him and assuring words were spoken. “Do not be afraid . . .I am the Living One.”
Revelation shows us Jesus as He truly is – enthroned in Heaven, glorified and triumphant; reigning at this very moment of your day. While the sun hangs high above, He is alive. When the stars fill the sky, He is alive. Whether in a sea of traffic, or in an isolated cubicle, He lives. Be it flood or famine, He is alive. He is the living One and, because He lives, we live also.
Know this, whatever your day holds – God has got it. Let His Spirit comfort you.
