Look at the cross reference in the margin of your Bible and notice the reference linking Mark 1:4 to Luke 1:77; this verse gives us the back story of John. John had been chosen for a key role in the drama of the ages. He was to be the prophetic time clock of the coming of Jesus and His Kingdom. Long before he became a fiery preacher, a zealous prophet and a challenger of the system, he was the son of Zechariah. Zechariah had first doubted, now proclaims the destiny on his son’s life. John’s destiny was to prepare the way of the Lord, give knowledge of salvation to His people and call people to repentance. Zechariah looked at his baby boy and saw potential and promise, a life to be blessed and used by God. Zechariah sees that although God had unlimited power He chooses to work through frail humans who start out as helpless babies. We must never underestimate what God can do through a life. There is great destiny inside of each one of us.
God, thank you for the work you are doing in me. Remove any fear or hesitation from my innermost soul in order to “dig in” to what You are doing; to recognize how to get on board with Your plan, not mine. Thank you the bold example of John the Baptist – let his zeal burn in me so that I too, can prepare the way for others.
