We are taking a brief pause in our ongoing study in the Book of Acts during this week of Spring Break, and offer this week’s devos as we examine how our foundation of faith impacts our view on marriage. We would love for you to share these devotionals with your friends, if it has impacted you. We will resume our study of Acts on March 18th.
. . . a man shall leave his father and his mother, and be joined to his wife; they shall become one flesh.” Genesis 2:24
This is the mind-boggling potential of a woman and a man in marriage – to become “one flesh.” To enter into a level of lifelong partnership that has never been experienced before and will never exist in any other dimension. Marriage is a true union of passion and purpose that brings two very distinct souls into a shared existence, and allows each to receive the gifts and destiny of the other.
However, this promise of merging can take place only within the boundaries God describes – when the husband sets aside all other emotional attachments and priorities in order to give his full allegiance to his wife. And the wife does the same. This union must be untouchable, a sacred space. When this occurs, a whole new destiny is fashioned for them, a calling they can fulfill only in complete togetherness.
The glory of marriage. Not only is it the pinnacle of human intimacy, it is the clearest window into the intimacy God desires to have with you! This parallels the self-sacrificing love between a man and his wife with the relationship between Christ and His church. Jesus’ continuous giving of Himself for people is the standard of love to be found between a husband and a wife. Their heaven-birthed love for one another will always elevate the other, never withdraw or hide. Their loving service to each other will bring wholeness to places of brokenness. Their words will reach deep and draw out the beauty of the other.
Have the courage to reach for the best in your spouse. Take the risk and serve well. Real love recognizes and affirms the true value and calling of your partner.
God, thank You for such a wondrous hope. I will never set my sights lower than this high calling to romantic partnership. Search me and know me, God. Wash away all that falls short of love, and let me channel Your unending love.
