The Intelligent Grasp

Read:

For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God. Colossians 1: 9-10

Reflect:

Christianity can never be considered commonplace, but Christianity is designed to be experienced in the highly practical. The passage today begins with “For this reason.” Paul gives thanks for what the Colossians had already received in truth and life, so he prays they may increase more and more in knowledge and power. It’s in these two realms that every believer would possess and experience the full measure of the Spirit of Jesus.

In the first several verses of Colossians, Paul explained why he and Timothy were thankful for their brothers and sisters. The Colossian Christians had strong faith in Christ, loved others, and played a key role in spreading the gospel. Overall, they honored God and one another, and were accomplishing a great work. For that reason, Paul prayed for them.

He doesn’t pray they would gain mystical, awe-inspiring mystery reserved only for contemplatives. Rather, he asked that there would be an intelligent grasp of what the will of God demands in daily living. That the presence of Jesus would hit us where we live, that every shred of self-vindication would be uncovered and we would be sensitive to things we never even thought of before. Don’t evade what He reveals to you, face it, live the truth He’s given you, and your knowledge of God will increase.

Take some time to pray over these verses for yourself. Ask the Lord to fill you with the knowledge of His will, to give you wisdom and spiritual understanding, and to help you walk in a way that fully pleases Him. You can’t be fruitful in your work until you’re faithful in your walk and following His will.

Respond:

Father, may I honor You today. Please use me to love others, to bring glory to You, and to spread the gospel to those around me. Amen
