We are continuing our Foundations series, where we examine how our foundation of faith impacts the details of our living, and would love for you to share these devotionals with your friends if it impacted you.
As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. If anyone speaks, let him speak as the oracles of God. If anyone ministers, let him do it as with the ability which God supplies, that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belong the glory and the dominion forever and ever. I Peter 4:10,11
Serving runs counter-culture to society. In the world, one serves to get, there are acts of kindness and benevolence, but in the end, it’s the server that gets the credit. Christ-followers are called to regard themselves as God’s go-betweens. The Master’s goods are in our hands, knowing full well that none of the things over which we have control belong to us. We simply serve as dispensers. We are never more like Jesus, than when we are serving. Serving others is a gift.
By surrendering to Jesus and giving Him complete control of your life, you are given a spiritual gifting. This spiritual gift isn’t to be used by you for selfish gain, but it’s a gift for others to experience to draw them closer to God. In this way, serving others is sometimes difficult, because it goes against our selfish nature.
Jesus taught us, by His example, to serve others. Jesus didn’t come to be served, but to serve. He didn’t ask all of humanity to do something He wasn’t willing to do. Each disciple is to serve in the strength God supplies. We are not to serve as though we are doing someone a favor, but humbled that what we give we have received first from God. This will protect the giver from pride and the gift from humiliation.
Developing a mindset of serving takes effort. We are seized by the motivation that, in all things, God would be glorified. We seek not to bring honor to ourselves, but to turn others toward God.
Lord, please give me a willing and enthusiastic heart. Help me see the needs around me, and respond by serving and giving my best. I love You, and surrender my wants and my desires today, so that I can serve You. Amen
