Jeremiah 1:9-10

Answer God’s Call

Read:

“Then the Lord put forth His hand and touched my mouth and the Lord said to me, ‘Behold, I have put My words in your mouth. See, I have this day set you over the Nations and over the kingdoms, to root and to pull down, to destroy and to throw down, to build and to plant.’ ” Jeremiah 1:9,10

Reflect:

Jeremiah finds himself living in a time when God’s people are distant from Him and have been for a while. They abandoned God and worshipped other gods (Jeremiah 2:13). No one was genuinely seeking God (Jeremiah 5:1-2). They were sin-happy (Jeremiah 9:2-3). The wronged each other and rejected God’s Word (Jeremiah 11:10). If Jeremiah were alive today and living in America, he would find himself in a very similar context.

It was in this context that God called Jeremiah to be a difference-maker while impacting his culture. Let’s look at Jeremiah’s calling.

First, God communicated to Jeremiah that he was known by God, set apart by God, and appointed by God before he was even born (Jeremiah 1:4). God had a specific mission for Jeremiah to accomplish.

Second, Jeremiah faced obstacles that provided an opportunity for him to avoid God’s calling on his life. It is understandable to see why he was nervous (Jeremiah 1:7) –  he was young, the content of God’s message to be spoken through him was very difficult (Jeremiah 10), and he didn’t have prior experience to lean on as this was all new territory. We find later that God would prove to be bigger than all of these obstacles.

Third, God encouraged Jeremiah that not only was He bigger than all of the obstacles, but He would be with him every step of the way until the mission was completed (Jeremiah1:8). Jeremiah took these three elements to heart as he answered God’s calling on his life, and he became a major difference-maker in his day. America is desperate for modern-day Jeremiahs. Be encouraged to answer God’s call today.

Respond:

God, thank you for giving me a life mission, for setting me apart, for being bigger than my obstacles, and for being with me. Help me to answer your call and make an impact on this world in a way that honors You. Amen.
