A Unique Purpose
“. . . Then the children of Israel groaned because of the bondage, and they cried out; and their cry came up to God because of the bondage.” Exodus 2:23
When the bondage of being led in captivity became so great to the people of God in Egypt, they cried out to God, desperately seeking a resolution to their troubles. The direct answer to the cries of the children of Israel would come through one very unlikely man named Moses. Early in life, Moses survived the river basket, became a foster child, had anger problems, and committed murder. Eventually, God called Moses out of the fields as a shepherd in order to lead His people out of bondage in Egypt.
Even though we live in a world that is sensitive to expressing ourselves uniquely, the reality is that our unique expressions are often simply an imitation of something or someone else. While it is very easy to comparison shop our abilities, looks, or usability against one another, it’s also very dangerous.
Why? The reason is because the purpose of your life is specific. You weren’t created to be an imitation of someone else’s reflection of God and His purposes. You are a unique carrier and purpose-fulfiller of God’s plans.
Because of that specific purpose of your life, you are uniquely positioned in this world by God to fulfill that purpose. When God had a need, He brought about a solution to accomplish it in the unlikely person of Moses. Throughout Scripture, He uses the unlikely to accomplish the impossible. That is great encouragement! When we feel most useless, God wants to do His greatest works through us!
If you have doubts of your purpose, ability, or usability, trust in God’s plans today for you and resist the temptation to see His purpose in someone else. In your praying, waiting, and asking, God will bring to focus the specific call on your life and the need He meant you to fulfill.
God, help me today to live out the imitation of Christ’s example and not the identity of someone else. I trust Your plan for my life and desire to be the complete and unique expression of You that I was created to be. Amen.
