Psalm 37:4

Your Desires = His Desires

Read:

“Delight yourself also in the Lord; and He shall give you the desires of your heart.” Psalm 37:4

Reflect:

How often have you heard this verse and thought to yourself, I desire a relationship with a certain someone, or I really desire to be on that team, or a part of that group, or a leader at church. This verse tells me that the Lord wants to give me my desire, so come on, God – let’s do it. I’m ready! This isn’t just an idea, but it is often the ideology of adults. Here’s the problem: we as Christians sometimes take a verse and want to define it on our terms, rather than on God’s. This scripture actually has nothing to do with us, but everything to do with God. This is crucial in discovering who you are in Christ. The first part of the verse says, “Delight yourself also in the Lord . . . .” In verses 3-7 you see key words such as trust, feed, delight, commit, rest and wait. The Psalmist is telling us that when we strive to do each of these things to the glory of God, then the Lord will give us the desires of our heart. When you reach this level of spiritual maturity, you will realize that your desires aren’t for mere worldly things, but heavenly things and the things of God.

This spiritual truth is also the key to learning God’s will for your life. The Lord’s will for your life isn’t mysterious. How many times have you talked to a friend or heard someone say that they are struggling to discern God’s will, whether it be which vocation to pursue, or which areas of service to follow. Don’t miss this: if you are truly delighting yourself in the Lord and pursuing Him, the personal desires that you may have are ultimately God’s desires for you. So go pursue the career, or passion of your heart, because in doing what you desire, you are glorifying Christ. Through your delighting in Him first, the desires and passions you may have, in reality, without you even realizing it, are His desires and passions for you.

Respond:

Father, help me to truly understand what it means to “delight” in You, and through that, God, place within me the desires and passions that you would have for me. Make Your will for my life known through my simple obedience to You. Amen.
