No Excuses – Just Follow
“And when Jesus came to the place, He looked up and saw him, and said to him, ‘Zacchaeus, make haste and come down, for today I must stay at your house.’ ” Luke 19:5
Have you ever let your circumstances keep you from following Christ? There are always opportunities to use negative situations as an excuse.
In the story of Zacchaeus, there are several things to learn of how not to let circumstances become excuses.
“I’m Not Spiritual Enough.” Don’t let your spiritual condition stop you. Zacchaeus was basically considered a thief and could have held himself back as unworthy. Have you ever held yourself back from following after Christ and your calling because of what you know about yourself, or what you have done in the past?
“I’m Not Qualified.” Don’t let your physical limitations keep you from your calling. Zacchaeus was short and had no access to even see Jesus. It took extra effort to put him in a position to see past the people who were blocking his view of Jesus. There are many physical limitations that you can claim as excuse for why not to follow.
“What Will Others Think?” Don’t let what others say keep you from following Jesus and your calling. As a tax collector, Zacchaeus had the worst of reputations and could have let what others had to say, mumble, or mutter about him stop him from responding when Jesus called to him. Zacchaeus spoke up in faith, under great pressure and negative peer influence. When was the last time you felt pressure to ignore the call of Christ because of what others said or thought about you?
“I Will Follow Him Anyway.” The truth is, that the Lord loves you no matter what and He is calling you to follow Him regardless of your circumstances. No excuses — just follow.
Thank You, Father, that You are calling me to follow You. Thank You that You love me no matter what and that You are seeking after me. There are many times when I am guilty of finding excuses for why I can’t follow. Please forgive me for giving into those excuses and show me the areas in my life where I need to run to You, like Zacchaeus did. I want my life to be an example of how to follow after You. I know You have a will for my life and I am ready to follow.
