Deuteronomy 10:14

During this season of Advent, we will be taking a break from our study in the Book of Mark and will instead offer daily devotionals for you to read aloud with your family, pertaining to this Advent season.  We will resume our study of Mark after the first of the New Year.

The Awe of Advent

Read:

“Behold, the heaven and the heaven of heavens is the Lord’s . . . the earth and all that is in it.” Deuteronomy 10:14

Reflect:

Don’t let your heart grow dull to the magnificence of this Christmas season. We are to reawaken our spirit, open the eyes of our heart and see the beauty of His love.

This verse is meant to fill the heart of the believer with awe and wonder. The word heaven repeated three times, along with the earth, leaves no doubt, He is the Lord of everything. All other powers dwindle into insignificance, therefor, He alone is worthy of our worship, love and devotion.

By tuning the ear to this verse, you’ll hear the writer exhorting the reader – look around you, everything you see is God’s, the heavens above and beyond, the earth and everything on it. He fell in love with you, that’s why you are here. So, cut away the thick calluses from your heart, and stop being so willfully hardheaded. He lovingly cares for you, so love Him in return.

In the life of a believer, fear and love are intertwined, they are the root of an obedient life. To fear God means to walk along the path which He’s laid out. To love God means to serve Him and obey Him. An obedient life produces the fruit of both fear and love. Worship and life are inseparable; love without reverence to God is impossible; and loose attachment to God is inconsequential without willfully following Him.

A life lived in love of Him is not a burden, the gift it gives is the fruit of grace. The Christian life is a call to obey God fully, but to obey requires love of the One who calls us to follow Him yet love Him, because He first loved us.

The mystery, wonder, and awe of Advent of God’s grace is that, though the whole universe belongs to Him, God has chosen you to be His own. Though the heavens are immense, the earth expansive, God has set His heart on you. He has desired and delighted to love you.

Respond:

Let God’s love zero in on you, and love others today like you are loved by God.
