1 Corinthians 13:7

During this season of Advent, we will be taking a break from our study in the Book of Mark and will instead offer daily devotionals for you to read aloud with your family, pertaining to this Advent season.  We will resume our study of Mark after the first of the New Year.

The Durability of Love

Read:

“love . . . bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things ,endures all things.” 1 Corinthians 13:7

Reflect:

Were someone to use this verse to describe an individual, they might be accused of being a push-over, an enabler, or just plain blind to the way things really are. But, they’d be wrong, because a God kind of love is not blind. Quite the opposite, it’s because love sees more, it’s willing to see less.

What does love see? It sees the price that was paid on Calvary for all the people and situations which threaten to make us mad and bitter. The more life one lives, the more clearly the work of the cross is seen. Stand at the cross and you’ll see the Spirit’s power to convict and convert. You’ll see the promise of the Father that, in due season, if one refuses to listen to the word of the Spirit, their sin will track them down.

There is a practical application here for every follower of Christ. Rather than feeling like you have to solve every problem, or get even with those who hurt you, you can simply bear with it, believe in and hope the best for people because of the commitment Jesus made when He died for them. Because of the strong love of Christ, you can be stronger in your love for others.

How can we display this kind of love? The only way is to let Jesus live through us. Look again at this verse. It’s describing the way Jesus loves at all times. His love is durable, battle-born, field-tested and strong enough to take whatever may come. We can’t use enough positive talk to convince ourselves into loving like Jesus, this kind of love is nothing less than the fruit of the Spirit.

But as we love Jesus and learn His ways, His spirit will produce His character in us. He promises if we are joined with Him, the connection is intimate and organic and the harvest is sure to be abundant. He’s the Vine and we His branches. So stay connected to Him, get to know Him more and more and His durable love will be produced.

Respond:

Are you trying to love others with a love you have manufactured?
