“And He said to them, Take head and beware of covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses.” Luke 12:15
Covetousness is an unquenchable thirst for getting more and more of something we think we need in order to be truly satisfied. It may be a thirst for money or the things that money can buy, or even a thirst for position and power.
Jesus talked a lot about money. In fact, sixteen of the thirty-eight parables He told are about money or possessions. Why would Jesus speak more about money, almost more than any other subject? Let me answer that in an indirect fashion! Have you noticed the number of storage units being built in your community? Have you noticed the reality shows that highlight personal addictions of people not being able to let go of their stuff, but instead, hoarding it? It is a very clear indicator that we have too much stuff! Jesus wants you and me to value only what is eternal in life, because of its ability to transcend this earth and be taken with us into heaven. Our identity is not found in what we own, but instead in who or what owns us. Therefore, we are called to live generously toward God and other people.
What are the eternal factors of this life that will follow us to heaven? Not an easy answer, but in short, the souls of people and the Word of God will be with us in heaven. The human soul was created to live for all eternity. Therefore, giving your life to make Christ known through your resources should be the objective of your life. It has eternal value! You can do this by looking for opportunities to invest in the lives of people by living sacrificially with your time, energy, resources, and most of all your very life. Have you ever seen a hearse with a U-Haul attached to it? Ridiculous, I know, but when we live our lives sacrificially we are pointing to the One who was the greatest sacrifice of all! His name . . . Jesus!
Lord Jesus, help me to live my life with generosity with eternity in mind by dedicating all that I have and all that I am to be used by You to make Your name more famous in my life. Allow me to invest in eternity with my resources and my life.
